Often the original text of the book is incorporated into the new design.Īccording to “Altered Books: A Brief Introduction”, book altering can be traced back to Greek scribes who recycled pieces of parchment that included text.ĭuring the Victorian period, scrap albums became popular. Areas of the book can be cut out providing windows and recessed niches. Techniques used are considered multi media and include: painting, collage, stamping, glueing, stapling, and sewing among others. The act of altering and creating a “new” book can become a metaphor for the changes and growing we want and are continually pursuing in our own lives.
